Creative Sessions Volunteer

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

When: Monday and/or Wednesday 10am - 12.30midday

Role reports to: Arts Coordinator

You will contribute to ending homelessness by

Making a real difference in the lives of our members by helping to create a safe and engaging environment for them to work towards gaining confidence and skills, ensuring that they are empowered to leave homelessness behind for good. You will do this by providing support to the class tutor as well as the Crisis members who attend the art drop-in session. This could involve helping out with small groups, session administration or one-to-one support with individual members.

 

 

 

 

 

  • Excellent communication skills – able to adapt approach and style and communicate well with a range of people from a variety of marginalised communities, who may have diverse and complex needs.
  • Good time-keeping and reliability 
  • Commitment to learning and an interest in the arts
  • Flexibilty in terms of the tasks you are asked to undertake and abilty to manage own tasks
  • Non-judgmental, patient and friendly 
  • An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and maintaining boundaries 
  • Be positive, productive and have a passion to help end homelessness 

 

  • Workplace experience in a national organisation 
  • The opportunity to share existing or develop new skills in a friendly and supportive environment 
  • Opportunities to work with staff and fellow volunteers during the year and an invite to our member celebrations where you can help us recognise the achievements of our members 
  • Regular meetings with your supervisor to discuss how your volunteering is going and what other opportunities and training may be available to you together with an induction 
  • A platform for building confidence  
  • A reference from a reputable organisation  

 

  • With direction from the tutor, support members to engage with the session and where appropriate use your initiative to support members 
  • If applicable, photocopy course materials and provide one to one or group support 
  • If applicable, to help set up equipment before the session and help clear up equipment after the workshop has finished 
  • Feedback any challenges or opportunities that arise during session to the class tutor 
  • Assisting the tutor with resource administration and the completion of paperwork 
  • Assist in creating displays of art-work throughout the Skylight building

 

We expect volunteers to comply with Crisis policies including health and safety, data protection and code of conduct at all times.

  • Travel and lunch expenses are reimbursed where appropriate
  • We strive to ensure that our services are welcoming, remain relevant and are fully accessible to everyone that we help and support. We are particularly welcoming of volunteers from diverse and other marginalised communities, as this helps us ensure the best experience for those that we are here to help.  People who have lived experience of homelessness are also particularly welcome to apply.
